Someone asked about your shirt

Why 77?

Peter thought he was being generous. He asked Jesus how many times he had to forgive somebody — seven times? Jesus said no. Seventy-seven.

The number isn’t a limit. It’s a reversal. Back in Genesis, a man named Lamech boasts that if anyone crosses him he’ll take revenge seventy-sevenfold. That’s the oldest line in Scripture about unlimited vengeance.

Jesus takes the same number and turns it inside out. Unlimited revenge becomes unlimited mercy. So 77 means: stop counting. The moment you’re keeping score, you’ve already lost the thread.

In Scripture

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.”Matthew 18:21–22

What the Church says

Forgiveness isn’t a feeling you manufacture. The Catechism is blunt about it: it is not in our power to stop feeling an injury, but a heart offered to the Holy Spirit can turn the hurt into compassion. You don’t have to feel it first. You have to decide it first.

If they keep talking

Most people who ask about this one have somebody specific in mind. You don’t need a theology answer. You need the honest one: “I wear it because I’m bad at it.”
